At 3,800 metres, Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert that feels like the end of the world in the best possible way.

Spiti Valley in the trans-Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh is one of India most remote and breathtaking landscapes. With monasteries perched on cliff edges, lunar terrain, turquoise rivers, and crystal-clear skies, it leaves every traveller permanently changed.

How to Reach Spiti

Via Shimla (open year-round): Shimla to Narkanda to Rampur to Nako to Tabo to Kaza. Road distance approximately 440 km from Shimla. The Kinnaur section is narrow and thrilling.
Via Manali (summer only, June to October): Over the Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass. More dramatic scenery but the road closes after heavy snowfall.

Key Places in Spiti

  • Kaza: The district headquarters and base for most exploration. Has ATMs, petrol, and decent guesthouses.
  • Key Monastery: The largest and most important monastery in Spiti, dating to the 11th century.
  • Chicham Bridge: Asia highest motorable bridge at 4,450 metres above sea level.
  • Langza Village: At 4,400 m, with a giant Buddha statue and rich marine fossils in the soil.
  • Chandratal Lake: A crescent-shaped glacial lake at 4,300 m, one of the most beautiful in India.

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Ascend slowly, hydrate constantly, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours at altitude, and carry Diamox after consulting your doctor.
